Angels Landing

Zion National Park, Utah, USA1 Day1,762m (5,785 ft)10 km (6.2 miles)

Overview

Angels Landing is Zion's most thrilling hike — a knife-edge ridge walk with 1,000-foot drop-offs on both sides, assisted by chains bolted into the rock. The final half-mile is a heart-pounding scramble along a narrow spine with sheer cliffs falling away on either side. It's not the longest or highest hike, but it's one of the most exhilarating in the US. A permit is now required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a permit?
Yes, since 2022. Apply via recreation.gov — a lottery opens 2 months before, with a smaller daily lottery 2 days before. Success rate ~30%.
Is Angels Landing dangerous?
The chain section is exposed with sheer drops. Several people have died here. If you're afraid of heights, this isn't for you. Stay calm, use chains, and don't go in wet/windy conditions.
Can children do this hike?
Theoretically yes, but the chain section is extremely exposed. Most parents don't bring young children. Older teens with no fear of heights can manage.
