Overview

The Grand Canyon Rim-to-Rim is one of America's most iconic hikes — descending from the North Rim through 2 billion years of geological time to the Colorado River, then climbing back up to the South Rim. You'll traverse desert, forest, and everything in between, experiencing temperature swings of 30°F+. This isn't just a hike; it's a journey through Earth's history. The trek demands respect — extreme heat, steep gradients, and limited water make this a serious desert crossing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which direction should I hike — North to South or South to North?
North to South is recommended. You descend the steeper North Kaibab Trail and climb the more gradual Bright Angel Trail. Also, the North Rim is higher, giving a gentler start.
How much water do I need?
Carry at least 4-6 liters between water sources. In summer, carry 1 liter per hour of hiking. Water is available at Phantom Ranch, Bright Angel Creek, and Indian Garden.
Can I do this in one day?
Technically yes (R2R2R athletes do it), but most hikers take 2-3 days. A single-day crossing is extremely dangerous and not recommended.
