Half Dome

Yosemite National Park, California, USA1 Day2,694m (8,836 ft)22 km (14 miles)

Overview

Half Dome is Yosemite's most iconic hike — a grueling 14-mile round trip that culminates in a cable-assisted scramble up a 400-foot granite dome. The final ascent uses steel cables bolted into the rock, requiring upper body strength and nerve. At the summit, you'll stand on one of the most recognizable formations in the world with 360° views of Yosemite Valley, Tenaya Canyon, and the High Sierra. A permit is required for the cables.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get a Half Dome permit?
Apply for the pre-season lottery (April) or daily lottery (2 days before hike). Only 300 hikers per day are allowed on the cables. Success rate is ~20-25%.
Are the cables really that scary?
The cables are steep (60° angle) but have wooden footholds. In dry conditions, fit hikers manage fine. In rain, the granite becomes extremely slippery — do NOT attempt in wet weather.
How fit do I need to be?
Very fit. You'll climb 4,800 feet over 7 miles. Start training months in advance. You should be comfortable with 10+ mile hikes with elevation gain.
